Beginning Learner's Ukrainian Dictionary: Anki Flashcards

With over 1,900 flashcards, this Anki deck includes all of the headwords from the Beginning Learner's Ukrainian Dictionary. The deck also contains reverse cards, bringing the total to more than 3,800 cards. These reverse cards display the English translation first, helping you test how well you can recall the Ukrainian. See the sample images for a clearer idea of the card layouts.

Each card features audio recorded by a native Ukrainian speaker from Kyiv.

There are four ways to study the cards:

  1. Alphabetical order: By default, cards are presented alphabetically. (You can confirm this in your Anki deck’s Options menu.) Each headword from the dictionary is followed by its example sentence(s).
  2. Random order: To study in random order, go to Options and select “show new cards in random order.” You will see both headwords and example sentences. To focus only on headwords, suspend all cards tagged example.
  3. Specific words only: You can study specific words by suspending all cards and then unsuspending only those you want to review. To suspend all cards: Browse → Current Deck → highlight all cards → Suspend. Then search for and unsuspend individual cards. Note: Because Ukrainian words in this deck include accent marks to indicate stress, they might not appear in standard searches. To fix this, install the add-on Ignore accents in browser search (code: 1924690148), which adds a helpful checkbox next to the search bar. For more search tips, see the Anki Manual.

Note: Common Ukrainian first names and grammar terms are not included in this deck (they are available in the book and audio indexes).

Informal “You”: On English-Ukrainian cards, when “you” refers to the informal singular pronoun ти, it is marked with an asterisk (*), to distinguish it from the formal/plural ви.
